Brad Henkel Quartet
Brad Henkel – Trumpet
Rieko Okuda – Piano
Isabel Rößler – Bass
Samuel Hall – Drums
Brad Henkel presents his new quartet. Normally found in the realms of free improvisation and electro-acoustic music, this is his first attempt at composing for a traditional jazz lineup. The ensemble still leans heavily on free improvisation and uses Henkel’s compositions as a springboard for their interplay. The influences of the pieces range from Miles to Feldman and Echtzeit improv to modern jazz. He chose the members of the ensemble on the basis of their many years of experience in improvising together in other formations.

Brad Henkel, known primarily for his work in free improvisation and electroacoustic music, presents his debut composing for a traditional jazz quartet with this new ensemble. The pieces draw influence from a wide range of sources—from Miles Davis to Morton Feldman, from real-time improvisation to contemporary jazz. The group’s distinctive sound is shaped by the carefully chosen members and their long-standing experience improvising together. Joined by Rieko Okuda on piano, Isabel Rößler on double bass, and drummer Samuel Hall, Henkel’s compositions serve as a springboard for intense interplay and unexpected improvisational worlds.
